Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Deforestation, a critical environmental issue, has far-reaching implications for biodiversity, climate change, and community livelihoods. In Dutse Local Government Area (LGA), Jigawa State, deforestation is driven by agricultural expansion, logging, and fuelwood harvesting, threatening local ecosystems and sustainable development. Public relations (PR) can play a pivotal role in raising awareness about deforestation by fostering community engagement, advocating for sustainable practices, and mobilizing stakeholders. Recent studies, such as Yusuf and Ahmed (2023), emphasize the effectiveness of PR campaigns in driving environmental awareness and behavior change. This study investigates the PR strategies employed in Dutse LGA to combat deforestation and promote sustainable environmental practices.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing awareness of environmental issues globally, deforestation persists in Dutse LGA due to limited public understanding, inadequate policies, and weak stakeholder collaboration. PR has the potential to address these challenges by informing and educating the public, but the effectiveness of such strategies in Dutse LGA remains underexplored.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine PR strategies used to raise awareness about deforestation in Dutse LGA.
  2. To identify the challenges faced in implementing PR campaigns on deforestation.
  3. To recommend effective PR strategies for combating deforestation in Dutse LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What PR strategies are employed to raise awareness about deforestation in Dutse LGA?
  2. What challenges hinder the success of PR campaigns on deforestation?
  3. What strategies can enhance PR efforts in addressing deforestation in Dutse LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. PR strategies significantly influence public awareness about deforestation in Dutse LGA.
  2. Challenges such as limited funding and stakeholder collaboration hinder PR effectiveness.
  3. Enhanced PR strategies can improve deforestation awareness campaigns in Dutse LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study provides insights into the role of PR in environmental advocacy, particularly in combating deforestation. The findings will benefit environmental policymakers, PR practitioners, and local communities by offering strategies to foster sustainable practices and protect ecosystems in Dutse LGA.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on PR strategies for raising awareness about deforestation in Dutse LGA, Jigawa State, analyzing their effectiveness, challenges, and potential improvements.
